Lazarus lies sick upon his bed in the home at Bethany while one sister keeps vigil at his side and the other stands in the doorway speaking with a messenger. The lowered curtain, quiet chamber, and attentive posture of the women frame the moment before the miracle, when Mary and Martha send word to Jesus: the one He loves is ill. The scene belongs to the opening of John 11, where grief, delay, and faith become the setting for Christ’s revelation as the resurrection and the life.
