The Beggars

Two beggars wait beside the road outside a stone city gate, their bowls set on the ground as they lift their hands in appeal toward a passing company. A robed teacher approaches with followers behind Him, while townspeople pause at the threshold, drawing attention to the men who are dependent on mercy at the edge of public life.

The composition echoes the Gospel account of the blind men near Jericho, where the needy cry out to Jesus, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David.” Their place beside the road becomes a place of encounter: need is not hidden, and Christ’s compassion interrupts the movement of the crowd. The image is well suited for themes of mercy ministry, healing, almsgiving, compassion, and sermons on seeing the overlooked.
